The Applications Engineer (Mechatronics and Controls) will play a key role in developing and supporting automation technology solutions. This position requires expertise in automation technologies and controls enabling the engineer to independently assess project stakeholder goals to identify and implement optimal solutions. The role involves the conceptualization and design of mechanical fixtures and components, as well as developing and programming control systems to across varying levels of complexity.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Program collaborative and industrial robots and end-of-arm-tools for application testing of handling, assembly, material removal, and other automated processes.
Program PLCs in various communication protocols for auxiliary automation equipment such as linear actuators, rotary modules, etc.
Experience with PLCs and controls in Beckhoff and/or Allen Bradley environments is preferred.
Expert-level understanding of key, focus, and common product technologies tested in the CoLab as well as alternative solutions.
Execute solution validations by meeting with stakeholders to understand goals, independently concepting and executing test, and communicating results.
Calculate and quote labor and resources for in-depth analysis of customer processes.
Setup and lead live demonstration and explanation of solutions when as requested by customers.
Successfully identify alternate solution proposals and approaches, actively engaging in communication with customer to clarify open points and questions.
Upload relevant or interesting applications successes to database to encourage global application knowledge.
Create trade show robot demonstrations to engage existing and potential customers at industry events including concepting, design, ordering, setup and programming collaborative robot.
Independent accomplishment of assigned tasks according to specifications.
Mentor and train apprentice and co-op students during department rotations.
Travel up to 20% as required.
Qualifications:
Proven experience in industrial automation, controls engineering, or related field.
Collaborative and industrial robot programming and integration experience (e.g., FANUC, KUKA, ABB, or similar).
Hands-on experience with PLC programming (e.g., Siemens, Allen Bradley, Beckhoff).
Experience with industrial networks and communication protocols (e.g., EtherCAT, Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profinet, etc.).
Ability to work effectively in a dynamic environment both independently and in a team setting
Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks meeting internal and external stakeholder needs
Ability to recognize and analyze data and problems, develop, implement and carryout solutions
Basic to advanced electrical knowledge of wiring inputs and outputs
Experience using 3D modeling software required - experience with PTC Creo preferred
Strong organizational skills and ability to work with minimal supervision
Education and/or Experience:
Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering or similar technical discipline or an equivalent combination of training, education and work experience. Minimum three years work experience in engineering, automation, or manufacturing field.
